For Svetlana and her family, Montgomery County is a safe haven.
The family of four fled from their home in Russia to seek refuge from the Russo-Ukrainian war. To get to America, Svetlana and her family had to leave everything behind and put all hope into a fresh start.
It was a long journey to arrive, and the hardship isn’t over yet. Until the family is granted political asylum, finding housing, work and even food is a daily challenge.
“We need food bad,” Svetlana shares.
Thankfully, Svetlana has found an incredible community full of compassion here in Montgomery County. The family joined a caring church, which has helped ease housing concerns. The family also found care and support at Community Assistance Center, a Montgomery County Food Bank partner food pantry.
There, Svetlana, her husband, and their two young daughters can pick up healthy foods like produce, proteins and other staples. It’s a huge relief for a mother who moves mountains every day for her family’s safety and well-being.
“It is truly American that so many people care,” she explains. “I am so happy, with all the people that want to help us.”
Thank you for your generosity which brings so much health and hope to some of our newest neighbors.
